Care Assistant Job Description
As a Care Assistant with JR Care, your role centres on delivering practical and emotional support to individuals in their own homes across Edinburgh, West Lothian, Midlothian and East Lothian. You’ll work from a personalised care plan for each client, following their preferences and routines while maintaining the highest standards of dignity, respect, and professional practice.
No two days — and no two clients — are alike. You might spend one morning supporting someone with their personal care routine in Morningside, and an afternoon providing companionship and home help to an elderly person in Livingston. The variety, the personal connections, and the visible difference you make are what make care assistant work so uniquely rewarding.
Responsibilities
As a JR Care Care Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
Providing personal care: washing, dressing, grooming, and continence support — with dignity and sensitivity at all times
Preparing meals and drinks according to individual dietary needs and personal preferences
Prompting and supporting clients to take medication as prescribed, and recording this accurately
Supporting mobility and safe movement, including use of equipment such as hoists and walking aids where appropriate
Providing meaningful companionship, social engagement, and emotional support throughout every visit
Carrying out light household tasks including tidying, laundry, and meal washing-up as part of a holistic care visit
Completing accurate, timely care records and reporting any changes in a client's condition to the care coordinator without delay
Working respectfully within the client's own home, following their preferences, boundaries, and routines at all times
What We Look For in Our Care Workers

- Reliability and punctuality — our clients depend on you being there
- Good communication skills and the ability to listen carefully
- An ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team
- A willingness to complete JR Care’s induction training and ongoing development programme
- A full driving licence and access to a vehicle is desirable but not always essential
Being Part of the JR Care Team
Joining JR Care means joining a team that genuinely invests in its people. Here's what you can expect:
A thorough, fully paid induction programme before your first solo visit — so you feel confident from day one
Regular supervision and support from an experienced care manager
Access to SVQ Health and Social Care qualification support
A consistent rota with the same clients wherever possible — so you can build real, meaningful relationships
